(multiple opinions will exist and my explanation is probably incomplete at this stage)

On several occasions, the first with Scott London, I noticed that the enemy ship, a warship or a hunter, could not hit us with its barrages. This seemed strange because initially it seems a hunter can shoot from any angle it wants to use.

Is there a magic angle or a "Captain's angle" that can be used to render a warship inoffensible (it can't shoot you) and it's just a matter of time until the cannoneers sink it?

The picture below was taken when sailing and William had this Captain's angle. The idea is that you might try to match the angle that we see on the compass.



Could ship speed influence the angle? (don't know yet)

How wide is the range of angles that are captain's angles? (again, don't know)

I hope we can work on this while playing in the evening.

That sailing style makes fighting hunters/warships both boring and un challenging. I only went broad to broad with them. All the more rewarding when they sank. No longer do I sail though.

Once you get the hunter warning, head south. You will eventually get a sign telling you to head back--ignore it. Turn your ship to the right if you need to speed up. Turn your ship to the left if you need to slow down.

When a ship approaching you is almost upon you push keys several times (about 6 to 9 is what I use) to speed up. Once the ship falls into position, push to slow down, the same number clicks that you used to speed up. This will return you to your cruising speed.

If you have a hunter and a warship just watch the one closer to you.

It helps to zoom out your perspective (making your ship smaller) so you can see a bigger area--once zoomed out you can see where the fire of the enemy ships is going.

The answer to most problems is to speed up.

The enemies want to sail around you clockwise--don't let them do that.

Don't be shy about leaving the edge and heading home if suddenly something bad happens and you get half your health shot off.

As mentioned above, your direction controls your speed. You might want to have a quest turned on so that there is a yellow arrow on the compass. Once you have your cruising speed you can check to see where this yellow arrow is positioned on the compass. Should there be an emergency and you have to suddenly speed up and no time to count your clicks, you can use the yellow arrow position to take you back to your cruising speed.

Although not required, it helps to be able to click full sail to increase your speed suddenly.
